The 1950s and 1960s were the heyday of the race transporters, which are still highly respected today—or have been rediscovered. The largely identical vehicles of Scuderia Ferrari and Maserati were arguably among the most famous and technically sophisticated race transporters of their time. It was based on a Fiat bus chassis—the Fiat 642 RN2, later followed by the more powerful Fiat 682 RN. It became a race transporter for three cars thanks to an open body by coachbuilder Bartoletti.
Large dual fuel tanks guaranteed a considerable range, eliminating time-consuming, expensive refueling stops. After the already strenuous journey, the real task began—track duty.
