The Mercedes-Benz 600, also known internally as the W100, was the official state and representative vehicle of Daimler-Benz during the 1960s and 1970s. This stylish, top-of-the-line vehicle was used worldwide and was the epitome of ultimate perfection, high-end technology, comfort, exclusivity, and uniqueness.
The Pullman variant was and remains to this day the largest passenger car of the post-war period.

The "big Mercedes" with hydraulic sunroof

The Mercedes-Benz 600, internally designated W 100, took the automotive world by storm when it was unveiled at the 1963 International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt am Main. The development goal was nothing less than to create a car that far surpassed what was technically possible at the time. Back then, perhaps even more so than today, Mercedes-Benz's motto was: the best or nothing. The car was not only technically unique, but despite its size and weight, it was also the fastest production sedan in the world at the time.

In the sales materials, the car was called "The Grand Mercedes," a reference to the Mercedes-Benz Type 770, which was the ultimate in prestigious vehicles in the 1930s. Following this example, the Mercedes-Benz 600 also became a globally sought-after state and representative vehicle from Daimler-Benz.

The Mercedes-Benz 600 was built in two basic versions: a 4- to 5-seater sedan with a short wheelbase (3200 mm) and a 6- to 7-seater Pullman version with a long wheelbase (3900 mm) and a central partition. The Pullman was available as either a four-door model with a rear bench seat, center armrest, and two facing individual seats, or as a six-door model with a rear bench seat, center armrest, and two forward-facing folding seats behind the front seats. This version was aimed at customers traveling with staff or bodyguards. However, private customers also frequently opted for the six-door Pullman, foregoing the partition and folding seats. Based on the Pullman version, Landaulet models with a folding soft top over the rear passengers were also produced from 1965 onwards. Two versions were offered: one with a long and one with a short rear soft top.

Until production ended in 1981, the model series remained virtually unchanged externally. The vehicles were powered by a specially developed 6.3-liter V8 fuel-injected engine producing 184 kW (250 hp). This allowed the 2.6-ton sedan to reach top speeds of up to 205 km/h. At the time, the "big Mercedes" was the fastest production sedan in the world. Maximum driving safety was ensured by shock absorbers adjustable from the steering column while driving, as well as a dual-circuit braking system with air pressure assistance. All four wheels had disc brakes, with the front wheels equipped with two brake calipers each.

The extensive standard equipment ensured maximum operating and driving comfort, including air suspension, power steering, central locking, an electronically controlled heating and ventilation system, and automatic climate control. A previously unique comfort hydraulic system enabled the automatic operation of the following functions: horizontal and vertical adjustment of the front seats and backrest angle, longitudinal adjustment of the rear bench seat, opening and closing of the car doors, the trunk lid, and the optional sunroof, as well as opening and closing of the side windows.

Regarding paintwork, interior fittings, and special equipment, a wide variety of individual customer requests could be fulfilled, so that – especially with the Pullman limousines and landaulets – it is unlikely that two examples with identical specifications will be found. For example, a rear bar with a refrigerator, entertainment systems, or car phones were available upon request. Besides its use as a representative vehicle for governments around the world, the Mercedes-Benz 600 also became the property of many prominent figures such as Elizabeth Taylor, Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Herbert von Karajan, Aristotle Onassis, Leonid Brezhnev, Emperor Hirohito, and even Pope Paul VI.

In retrospect, Daimler-Benz created a product with this luxury sedan that caused a worldwide sensation and became a unique automobile of its era. Featuring a hydraulically operated sunroof, the original could be found in both official fleets and private collections.

CMC wants to take on this challenge and has set itself the task of reproducing the Mercedes-Benz Pullman six-door with sunroof as an authentic, all-metal model with unparalleled features as a new product in 2020. It is intended to be a miniature of superlatives.
