The “big Mercedes” as a landaulet

The Mercedes-Benz 600, internally known as the W 100, took the automotive world by surprise when it was unveiled at the 1963 International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt am Main. The development brief was nothing less than to create a car that far exceeded what was technically feasible at the time. At that time, perhaps even more so than today, Mercedes-Benz's motto was: the best or nothing. The car was not only absolutely unique in technical terms, but despite its size and weight, it was also the fastest production sedan in the world at the time.

In the sales documents, the car was called "The Great Mercedes," a reference to the Mercedes-Benz Type 770, which was the ultimate representative vehicle in the 1930s. Following this example, the Mercedes-Benz 600 also became a globally sought-after state and representative vehicle from Daimler-Benz.

The Mercedes-Benz 600 was built in two basic versions: as a 4- to 5-seat sedan with a short wheelbase (3200 mm), and as a 6- to 7-seat Pullman version with a long wheelbase (3900 mm) and a central partition. The Pullman was available either as a four-door with a rear bench seat, center armrest, and two opposing individual seats, or as a six-door with a rear bench seat, center armrest, and two folding seats arranged in the direction of travel behind the front seats. This version was aimed at customers traveling with staff or bodyguards. Private customers also often opted for the six-door Pullman, foregoing the partition and folding seats. Based on the Pullman version, Landaulet models with folding roofs over the rear passengers were also produced from 1965 onwards. Two versions were offered: one with a long and one with a short rear roof.

The exterior of the series remained virtually unchanged until production ended in 1981. The vehicles were powered by a specially developed V8 injection engine with a 6.3-liter displacement and 184 kW (250 hp). This enabled the 2.6-ton sedan to reach top speeds of up to 205 km/h. This made the "big Mercedes" the fastest production sedan in the world at the time. Maximum driving safety was ensured by the shock absorbers, which could be adjusted on the fly from the steering column, and the dual-circuit braking system with air pressure assistance. All four wheels were equipped with disc brakes, with the front wheels each equipped with two calipers.

The extensive standard equipment ensured maximum operating and driving comfort, including air suspension, power steering, and central locking, as well as an electronically controlled heating and ventilation system and automatic climate control. A previously unique comfort hydraulic system enabled the automatic operation of the following functions: horizontal and vertical adjustment of the front seats and the backrest angle, longitudinal adjustment of the rear seat bench, opening and closing of the car doors, the trunk lid, and the optional sunroof, as well as opening and closing the side windows.

In terms of paint finishes, interior fittings, and special installations, the most diverse customer requests could be realized, so that – especially with the Pullman limousines and landaulets – it would be difficult to find two examples with the same equipment. For example, a rear bar with a refrigerator, entertainment systems, and car telephones were available upon request. In addition to being used as a representative vehicle for governments around the world, a Mercedes-Benz 600 was also owned by many prominent figures, such as Elizabeth Taylor, Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Herbert von Karajan, Aristotle Onassis, Leonid Brezhnev, Emperor Hirohito, and even the then-Pope Paul VI.

In retrospect, Daimler-Benz succeeded with this luxury sedan, creating a product that attracted worldwide attention and became a unique automobile of its era. With its landaulet-style top, the Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman was primarily used as a state carriage.

CMC is committed to taking on this challenge and has set itself the task of recreating the Mercedes-Benz Pullman six-door landaulet in 2020 as an authentic all-metal model with unsurpassed equipment details. It is intended to be a miniature of superlatives. Further variants are subject to change.
