Formula 1 was dominated by Ferrari in 1956. The Scuderia's star driver, veteran Juan Manuel Fangio, won the Drivers' World Championship title in a Ferrari D50 after a grueling and hard-fought Grand Prix season. His consistently good results, which helped him build a points tally with first and second-place finishes, were crucial to this success. His spectacular second-place finish at the final race in Monza was enough to secure the World Championship title.
- Wearing the starting number 1 on a white background, Fangio competed in the 6th race of the World Automobile Championship at the Silverstone Circuit in England on July 14, 1956. Driving a short-nosed Ferrari D50, he won this race and celebrated his first Silverstone victory.
- One month later, on August 5, 1956, the German Grand Prix was held at the Nürburgring. Juan Manuel Fangio, driving a D50 with starting number 1, won the race convincingly. He drove the Ferrari D50, with its distinctive yellow and blue stripes on the nose, across the finish line by 45 seconds.
- The eighth and final race of the season, the Italian Grand Prix in Monza on September 1, 1956, would decide the title. The contenders were Fangio and Collins in Ferraris, and Behra in a Maserati. Fangio's car, number 22, had to make a pit stop for repairs – but he was able to take over from Collins in number 26. A second-place finish was enough for Juan Manuel Fangio to win the 1956 Drivers' World Championship.
