Eugenio Castellotti, born on October 10, 1930, was registered as an amateur driver for Ferrari from 1950. His talent was great enough to earn him a second podium finish at the mega-motorsport event, the Mille Miglia, as early as 1952. From 1953 onward, Castellotti successfully competed in sports car races for Lancia – among other achievements, he finished third in the Carrera Panamericana, beaten only by Juan Manuel Fangio and Piero Taruffi. He also won the Italian Hill Climb Championship in 1953. It is therefore not surprising that motorsport enthusiast Gianni Lancia bestowed upon him the accolade of Scuderia Lancia.

Scuderia Lancia's debut was a costly battle, both at the final race of 1954—the Barcelona Grand Prix—and at the Argentinian Grand Prix at the beginning of 1955. None of the three cars finished, and World Championship points were out of sight for both team and driver.

The successes in the two Grand Prixs in Turin and Pau were therefore a much-needed glimmer of hope for Scuderia Lancia's costly Formula 1 project, even if they did not bring in any points.

Lancia was gratified to see that its cars could keep up with Mercedes in Monaco, and that Ascari was level with Fangio at the European Grand Prix in Monaco. Fangio was awarded pole position, having set a time of 1:42.1. Eugenio Castellotti qualified in fourth place, just behind the second Silver Arrow of Stirling Moss.

The turbulent race, with retirements due to technical defects at Mercedes, Maserati, and Gordini, reached its dramatic climax with Ascari's dive into the harbor basin – which at least meant that Ascari didn't retire due to a technical defect. With surprise winner Maurice Trintignant at the wheel of a reliable, but already aging Ferrari Supersqualo, the Grand Prix had reached an almost comical end. Eugenio Castellotti had closed the gap to Trintignant's Ferrari by just 20 seconds after 100 laps.
