It was constructed under the supervision of the then head of the Mercedes-Benz racing car department, Rudolf Uhlenhaut. The nickname "Uhlenhaut Coupé" commemorates this. However, it never saw racing, as Mercedes-Benz withdrew from motorsports after the end of the 1955 season.
