Description
CMC Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, W198, Roadster Hardtop in metallic blue
Limited edition of 1500 units
Exterior: metallic blue (Mercedes DB334)
Interior: cream
Roof: metallic blue
Special features: detachable hardtop, movable sun visors, opening ashtray, as well as folding seats and removable wheel covers
History:
The 300 SL Roadster was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1957 as the successor to the Gullwing, which had been introduced in 1954, and was literally demanded by the then American importer, Maximilian Hoffmann.
Externally, the car differs from the coupé in the front area with different headlights and, of course, the textile soft top.
However, to allow for comfortable entry even with the roof closed and to equip the car with conventional doors hinged to the A-pillar, the tubular space frame had to be fundamentally redesigned. Due to the now "normal" entry, the folding steering wheel of the coupé was also eliminated.
The chassis was also improved and received a single-pivot swing axle, which provided significantly greater driving stability than the sometimes treacherous double-pivot swing axle of the coupé.
From 1961 onwards, the Roadster was also the first Mercedes passenger car to be equipped with disc brakes all around.
215 hp from the three-liter six-cylinder with direct injection and a top speed of 250 km/h were a real statement at the time and were enough to go down in history as one of the most powerful super sports cars of its era.
During its production period from 1957 to 1963, 1,858 units of the open and extremely elegant, elongated 300 SL were built, which, incidentally, laid the foundation for the enduring SL legend.
Technical data:
Six-cylinder inline engine tilted 45° to the right
Bosch 6-plunger injection pump / direct injection
Overhead camshaft
Power: 215 hp at 5,800 rpm
Displacement: 2,996 ccm
Bore x Stroke 85 x 88 mm
Top speed: 250 km/h
Acceleration 0-100 km/h 10 s
Not suitable for children under 14 years. May contain small and sharp parts.
