History (original vehicle)

Series production of the 904 began in January 1964. The first 904s were produced for the Porsche factory racing team and were intended to participate in races such as the Targa Florio on April 26, 1964.

The most notable victory came in 1964 at the Targa Florio, where Antonio Pucci/Colin Davis took overall victory in car 904-005, followed by Gianni Balzarini/Herbert Linge in second place in car 904-006. The small 2-liter Porsches thus beat all the more powerful Ferrari GTOs and Shelby Cobra Roadsters, driven by world-class drivers such as Phil Hill, Dan Gurney, and Bob Bondurant. This was a major victory for the Porsche team in 1964.

Subsequently, 904-005 finished 5th overall at the Spa 500km on May 17th with Edgar Barth at the wheel. After a retirement during the Nürburgring 1,000km on May 31st, 904-005 received an upgrade package for the 1965 racing season, including larger "elephant ears," the rear air intakes.

In 1965, 904-005 achieved the following results: 5th place at the 12 Hours of Sebring on March 27, 5th place at the Targa Florio on May 9, 4th place at the Mont Ventoux hillclimb on June 6, 2nd place at the Rossfeld hillclimb on June 12, 4th place at the Sesana-Sestrières hillclimb on July 25, 6th place at the Fribourg hillclimb on August 8, and 4th place at the Ollon-Villars hillclimb on August 29. The car won many class victories and contested all races of the Manufacturers' Championship from 1964 to 1966.

In 1966, Porsche teamed up with Joe Buzzetta and Gerhard Mitter at Daytona. The duo finished 7th and 1st in the 2.0-liter prototype class with this car. After Porsche sold the car to the USA in early 1966, it changed hands several times until Joe Buzzetta acquired it in 1996, 30 years after driving it at Daytona. From time to time, he competes in vintage car races with a Porsche from his collection, occasionally with a 904-005.
